Ok I need an acoustic guitar for a beginner. Good tone would be great, needs to come in at $100 or less. I'm sure there are decent ones out there that don't play like shit with crappy intonation.

I know you said $100 or less but I'm going to ignore that for just a moment () and mention Alvarez. My parents got my sister a really inexpensive Alvarez as her first acoustic (I think it was $150 or less...?) and it sounds and plays AMAZING, to this day and side-by-side with stuff significantly more expensive.
Whatever you buy, the thing you need to watch for is the action. On anything "beginner", the first compromise is on how the neck is set and the quality of the fretwork. Obviously wouldn't expect LACS quality but still, those two things are probably the biggest deterrents to beginners. Speaking from experience and teaching lessons for a few years.
