We play $3000 guitars through $5000 amps and complain that a $20 string mute is too expensive?
I play a $500 guitar through an $800 amp (if that), thank you very much.

Sure. Would you prefer to send me the money via check or paypal?

*edit* What if I just buy a $20 set of string mutes?

You can't. You're not at the required level of Corksniffery.

oh, and they slide pretty easily over the nut, just depends on how tight you have it and what angle the strings go towards the tuners off of the nut.

Damn, Chris 'd me!

I tried hairbands, made up dampeners made of a ton of improvised materials, and why they did their job, the big problem was always quick and reliable use and / or their durability (some of my contraptions were made out of felt and the like). When I play my stuff live, I have usually less than 0.5 secs to get the thing on or off, no exceptions, and these simply work, not to mention not being damn annoying to move from a guitar to another or simply restringing. Last thing I need when on the road is to be annoyed - that's what douchy venue owners or bad roadies are for!
