I can't find a shop in the area who will do a refret for less than it would cost me to commission a custom neck, so the search begins for someone to make it.

Et guitars could do it, but I would other to keep it state side for time sake. Is there anyone who will build me a lefty neck?

how bad are the frets? Whats the price you've been told for a refret?

well, they are fairly bad. a few are extremely flat, some are just popping out to the point that I can move them. Ive done a bit of work on it and glued the loose frets in, and its made the neck at least playable, but its the wrong neck for the guitar anyway (right handed and wrong fingerboard) so i'd like a replacement anyway. i just wanted to see if a refret, or crowning would be worth it.

i was quoted from a few different places between $290 on the low end, and $350 on the high end.

$200 wouldn't be horrible, but I could buy a fretting kit from stewmac and do it myself for that, not to mention that's probably 3/4 of the way to a new neck anyway.

$350 is pretty high for a refret, wouldn't you think?

$350 is high for a re-fret, if unbound.

If the neck has that many issues, A) are you sure the guitar isn't just a piece of shit? B) take your guitar to a tech for maintenance once a year or so...it'll solve these issues.

And if you've never re-fretted a guitar, I wouldn't do it to a main player for your first time....risky indeed.

As for buying a new neck....well, you can always do Ebay....there are always Ibanez necks popping up on there. As for a custom....you can put in the cash and pray you get one in return. I know ET has been good, but he's in Australia, yeah? Stateside....I've heard nothing good.

Good luck, bro!

$200 isn't too bad IMO. That's the minimum I charge... I'd never do a custom neck for $200. Probably wouldn't do it for $350 either. That's a lot of work!

Buying a kit on StewMac and trying it yourself doesn't mean you'll come out with a great fretjob, especially if you've never done it before.

its an RG550l, and its got a righty neck on it. definitely not my main player, so if it comes out badly, its no big deal.

I check ebay fairly frequenly, but the chances of finding a lefty, maple board neck are basically zero. in fact, i hardly ever see anything but the RG1570 necks come around. I would really like to get a wizard profile to keep it as original as possible; though, thats pretty well shot already.

I'm fairly decent at doing setups, so I know its not just in need of a good one. If I sight down the neck I can very easily see 2 frets higher than the others. I had no idea the neck was this bad when I made the trade

Sorry, $200 was a typo. it was $290. i just missed the 9. ill update the first post.

i got a quote from ET a few years back for a replacement neck for another Rg, and i vaguely remember it coming out to around $400 bucks. I guess my point is just weighing whether I want to blow a refret on a neck that I plan to replace anyway, or just go ahead and order a new one.

Doesn't sound like there is a whole lot of options over here, though.
