I was just watching this clip of an old LP Junior:

That bridge shouldn't really intonate well at all, but it sounds great... Is it just in the hands or am I missing something?
I have a straight bar bridge on my Gretsch (although it's floating, so I can move the whole bridge, but not adjust for individual strings), and I can get the intonation pretty good with a wound G string, but not perfect.
Keep in mind those bridges do have little grub screws where the tailpiece attaches to the studs to get a small amount of intonation adjustment. Not perfect but it does work to some extent.
