A few weeks ago I started thinking about getting into the world of 7-string guitars, and have looked for a used high end one ever since. I found a '98 UV777P, and the guy is offering to sell it to me for about 1200$.
Seeing as I don't know much about buying used guitars in terms of checking the condition, the overall quality etc., I thought I'd come to you guys for some help in deciding whether or not I should buy this.
Some pics of it :
So far I've read mixed reviews about this guitar. Some people say that the quality it self isn't really up to par with other Universe/JEM, and a lot of people seem to REALLY hate the Blaze II pickups. Do you guys think that 1200$ is a fair price? Keep in mind that guitars in Europe/Denmark are a lot more expensive than in the US
Couple dings but nothing ridiculous - pics look familiar, though. Where's the seller? You might want to get him to send you a customized pic of sorts - maybe the guitar with a notecard with your name and the date on it or something, just to play it safe.
I think a lot of the reason for the mixed reviews is I've played a number of these now and they've been a little inconsistent. The first one I've played (Chris's first) flat-out owned, but the second one he bought was merely average. Hardly bad - no worse than a run-of-the-mill 7620 - but definitely not worth what they sell for.
That said... My very limited experience and the anecdotal evidence I've seen suggests that the older ones are generally more reliably better guitars. This one is a '98, so it has a good chance of being a really nice instrument. Also, the price is very reasonable, cheaper than most new "nice" seven string Ibanezes. If the seller checks out, it seems like it's a fair price for what should be a good guitar.
(I love the blaze bridge pickup, FWIW).
