I've discovered a few things....
Theres very little as nice as the top of the range Ibanez or ESP models, they are just superb.
played Suhr, Tom Andreson, Musicman - they were all nice, but I honestly liked the J-custom and ESP better. The J-custom at Shibuya Ishibashi was particularly awesome.
Edwards make better Gibsons than Gibson do. At least the ones I played were nicer.
The Japanese have a fetish for insane Basses, played Modulus, Dingwall, and a frankly rubbish Status Graphite. Warwicks are everywhere...I still like my 5 string thumb, tried a 5 string Ibanez that was excellent.
Prices here vary massively from shop to shop.
Ended up buying a few airbrushes and some Steinberger strings.
Miiight go back to the esp custom shop...they had some frankly funky stuff.
also played an esp Amorous, that was spectacular, was not impressed by the mayones at Mikki Gakki in Osaka, nothing in particular was wrong with them, but nothing screamed awesome either, had a bit fo a play on one and it had the volume knob exactly where I hate it, so that's probably why I got pissy at them...
Mikki Gakki is also where I saw the semi hollow dingwall, I didn't bother trying that out because my bass skills were frankly embarrassing after the guy who was noodling while I waited.
