I was in a GC the other day, and saw two of these on the walls:
Fender USA Nitro Satin Series Stratocaster Electric Guitar | Musician's Friend
I've never liked the 70s strat headstock, but the finish is actually pretty hot in person - looked pretty open-grained, almost like an oil finish than a gloss. I don't know if I would buy one at $800, but to be fair I also didn't pick it up - it very well may have played and sounded like a monster.
EDIT - also, now that GC lost Mesa, it's a pretty depressing place.
Those are special run American Special guitars so they have Texas Specials, 12" radius and Jumbo frets.
They are pretty awesome. There is a Tele in the same finish that is also awesome.
