hey guys, i recently started finishing one of my guitars with tung oil. here is the exact product i am using.
STEWMAC.COM : Behlen Tung Oil
i started off doing as the instructions on the bottle said. i would put on a pretty thick coat, leave it on for 15 minutes then wipe off all the excess. after many several coats of this i seemed to be getting nowhere because not much oil seemed to be getting on. i seeked elsewhere for tung oil finishing instruction and came upon several credible sites saying it works even better to put on a thick layer, and now whipe off excess but just wait for it to dry for 24 hours. i did this, the first coat worked splendidly and i sanded lightly and put on a second coat. the second coat is now being an utter and complete pain. it did was not even dry after a whole 30 hours or so. so i just wiped it clean, and a day later it still has not dried. it has been around 3-4 days since that second coat was applied and there is still a fair bit of oil coming off the wood and the wood is nowhere near finished. i then took a buffer (the sort that you attach to a drill) and attempted to buff all the excess oil off the guitar and neck. this did not work as it got it nice and shiny but still oil would come off when you touched the guitar.
im pretty clueless as to how to fix this little problem, any help would be great!
i am not looking for a super thick shiny finish! just enough so it doesnt feel like bare wood when you touch it!
the reviews of that stew mac tung oil say that after a few coats, it would take up to a week between coats. it was a common complaint. just wait it out.
try spraying a nitrocellulose finish if you haven't a lot of patience… lol
