I am looking to get a new (used) bass. The one I have now was great as a starter, but I am having a hard time getting more consistent bass tones for recording on it. It is just clanky/buzzy, and that is all you hear.
Anyway, since I have an 8 string, I figured I should get a 6 string bass. However, is the 6th string a lower string? Is it even usable if it is? If not, should I just get a 5 string
I found this bass used for $350:
Ibanez SR506 Soundgear 6-String Brown Mahogany Rosewood Fretboard | Musician's Friend
I would like to be in the 250-400 range, so I definitely want to go used. Again, I just need something that has a more consistent sound, that doesn't pop and clank and require a compressor at a ratio of 30:1 to make it even sound decent.
The difference between a 5 string and a 6 string is actually a higher string. 5s usually have the standard 4 plus a low B, the 6 is the same, but with an extra high C.
That bass will be awesome. I think you'll notice an enormous improvement with the pickups. My BTB6 and BTB5 have those same pickups, and they sound awesome.
