So I'm pretty ignorant about string nuts and would like to change that. Thanks to Google, I'm somewhat familiar with the different materials and how they affect tone and tuning stability, but most of the searches I've tried end up bringing me to the Warmoth/Allparts/Stewmac pages where I can buy a nut.
I'm really interested in more practical info like; are certain materials better for certain genres, or do certain nut materials pair better with certain bridge setups/body shapes/etc? I have a 25" scale mahogany Ibanez 7 string with a TOM, would one type of nut be better than another because of the specs of the guitar or is it pretty much just personal preference?
Tonally, IMHO nut material doesn't matter once you fret a note, unless it's soft and/or improperly cut, in which case it can cause tuning issues or binding when bending or using vibrato or a guitar tremolo.
