This is my first 7620. I saw it on eBay for 400 and decided to pull the trigger.
Everything seems to be in good shape, but this is the first time I've ever seen a trem strung up like this.
The ad didn't state this, but all seven of the string retainer blocks are missing.
The string retainer screws are just threaded through some of the ball ends, except the low E and B. They're just smashed in place by the screws themselves. Haha.
I emailed DiMarzio about a pickup suggestion, and this-
"I'd like to combine that almost hollow character that Slash's Les Paul has, with the smooth, fat sustain of Steve Vai's Evo, and add a bit of the vocal harmonic quality of EVH.
Looking for pickups that'll cover a good mix of hard/progressive rock, copious amounts of Pink Floyd, and the occasional 80s hair metal cover.
Thick and round, but cutting and
vocal, with good sustain."
-prompted them to suggest the Ionizer set.
I avoided these specifically because of their origin, because that kind of tone (and music) is far removed from what I like personally.
Does anyone have any other suggestions before I swallow my pride and give these a try?
I thought only the 7420s came in the Vampire Kiss colour?
Wait no, the 7620 also came in VK. But still, 400 for one of the finest 7 strings Ibanez produced is a good score. Well done.
As for pickups, you want what every guitarist wants- the magic set that does everything. I haven't had experience with the ioniser but I found tha for what you're looking at a more medium to vintage output would be more suitable. Something like a PAF pro set and when you need more 'oomph' run an OD into it.
