A friend of mine asked me if I was free to help her do some jazz/bossa trio shows over the next few months. Since I really wasn't doing much gigging wise, I'd thought sweet and jumped in. Plus I owe her as she's gonna be singing on a song on my album.
However, this is a jazz trio gig and since it's also about looks and sound, none of my guitars cut it. Alex Skolnick also once said along the lines of "If you're gonna play jazz, do it properly and get the right guitar for it". Thankfully Ibanez also have a line of Artist hollowbodies, though being of small build, I wasn't too keen on getting those full bodied jazz boxes and I still had versatility in mind. In the end, I got this:
Initially I wanted something with a Bigsby, because, whammy bars. Ultimately it didn't matter. This guitar is a dream to play. It's more of the size of a 339 than the full sized 335 so it's perfect for me. I can do the jazz trio material, and fantasise about being like Larry Carlton and Eric Johnson too... with large amounts of suck in my playing. The best thing about the Artcore Expressionist line is that these come with Super 58 pickups stock, probably the best non brand Ibby stock pickups. So I'm not gonna mod anything here like I usually do, which is a relief.
Funny how years ago I once declared to myself that I would not be caught dead playing these hollowbodies. My 16 year old self would kill me now.
Fuck bigsbys and congrats on a guit.
