After the success with the Telexplorer last year, my dad asked me if I wanted to try a different kit this year.
So, I ordered a korina (white limba) SG Junior kit. Out of the box, it needed some finish sanding to get rid of sanding scratches and prep it for finish. However, beyond that, the woodworking was very clean and the fretwork looks excellent.
We glued the neck in with Titebond:
The headstock pitch on these kits is at a lower angle than most Gibsons, which makes the joint stronger.
Next we applied some red stain (it's not quite so saturated in real life):
Next up: sealing and grainfilling. Debating whether I want to use a dark grainfiller to highlight the grain further, or a clear one since the stain seeped into the pores and made them a bit darker already.
It will be getting a Lollar 5% overwound dogear P90, Wilkinson compensated wraptail bridge, and either Gotoh plate tuners or Gotoh stealth tuners (we'll see if it neck dives with the plate tuners first).
That korina was pretty dude! Looks good.
