My boss called me into his office yesterday to show me the list of clearance computers we had that had big price drops. I spotted "Gibson" on the sheet beside it and asked what was up. Apparently someone had ordered this off the website delivered to the store, and canceled their order after it had left the warehouse. The guy who received it didn't know what to do with it, so it sat in the back of the store under the radar for a couple months, and surfaced when it popped up on the clearance list. The manager was just looking at the numbers, and made me an offer I couldn't say no to.

This is the 2013 model, with the ugly pickups but without the ugly anniversary inlay at the 12th fret. It plays great, but I need to sit down and do a setup. It's still got the stock 9's, and the neck needs a bit of relief. As much as it bothers me that it has a maple neck, it seems to balance a bit better, and isn't really neck heavy at all. I'll give the pickups a run through after I get it set up. I really don't like the black covers, but they're Gibson 490s, so they should definitely suffice for the time being.

This put a huge dent in my meagre amp fund, but I've always wanted an SG and am really glad I was able to get this. Long term, I'd like to get the green-ish Kluson style tuners, and I'm thinking I'll put one of the smaller '60s style b/w/b pickguards on. I've always wanted a P90 Gibson, so whenever I get around to replacing the pickups, I'll probably try a zebra DiMarzio Bluesbucker set. From what I've read, they're supposed to sound pretty close to P90s, and I can't afford the Fralin hum-cancelling humbucker sized P90s.

EMG make a humbucker sized P90, as do Bareknuckle and Seymour Duncan, for what it's worth. Those are seriously nice guitars.

Those play great. If they had a mahogany neck, I'd already own one.
