A few months back I bought a heap of shit LTD ST203FR. We all had a good giggle at the shit factory relic job, but I dug the feel of the neck so it stuck around. I felt it could be a cool upgrade project.
Anyway, I didn't realise when I first bought it that the threads on the FR nut had been stripped (two of them. how the fuck does someone do that?!). The trem had been upgraded to an OFR by the previous owner, but the nut had remained an FR Special.
I emailed Floyd Rose back and forth for about 2 months (VERY slow to reply) and deciphered that I need an R1 Special nut, as that's what it said on the baseplate of the nut that was on there. After another month of fucking about they told me that doesn't exist, so finally sent me an OFR R1 nut. Turns out I didn't need that. I needed an R2. So I returned it. Ordered an R2. Which finally arrived today.
By this point I'm like fuck this guitar... it's shit. It was only meant to be a fun project but fuck it, I resented it. I grabbed a JB from Cameron a couple of weeks back (cheers dude!) to make it a little more attractive to any potential buyers, with the view to just sell the damn thing.
So I've spent the best part of today putting it back together, chiselling (badly) extra wood out to put the new nut on ('special' and 'original' FR nuts are different heights. Why? Anyway, took too much off, had to shim it, LOLZOMGSAUSAGECOPTER) soldering the JB in, gave it a fret level/dress, and a good set-up.
And holy shit this thing is a beast. It absolutely fucking SHREDS, and sounds incredible. I actually really really dig the single-coils, they're very powerful and don't get that crazy drop in tone when you flick to them from the bridge like with most H-S-S configs. There's a little loss in output/gain of course, but it's not stupid and unusable.
Sure it's still got that shit factory relic job but you know, I can kinda live with it for a guitar that plays/sounds so well.
Not sure I can sell it now
