I went to a gear swap today at Gear Exchange here in OKC. Gear Exchange is a regular stop for me; it's where I picked up my 5150.
This week, Gear Exchange - along with one of the guitarists from Crazy Love Hawk, Shaun - put a swap meet together. I'd done my best to get the word out about it on social media. Plus last week I had the opportunity to see Shaun and his bandmates play and then write an article about the show, so another reason for going was to talk further with him.
I've been looking for another Strat (besides my MIJ) but everything was out of my price range. I decided to haul some of my stuff out there, set up a table, and see what kinds of funds I could raise.
About three hours into the outdoor swap meet, I called it... it was hotter than hell, my fat bald egg was starting to crisp, and I was concerned about the guitars I'd taken out in the hot sun. I went in to say goodbye to Zack, the guy who runs the place, when I saw this guitar on the wall.
It's a 2014 Fender American Special Strat. The trem is a vintage, the pickups are Texas Specials, it has a satin fretboard, and the big headstock. The color is tobacco burst, I think.
Bit of trading later and some cash and I walked out with it. It's damn near flawless. The only scratch I can find is on the pickguard, appropriately enough, and there are several on that.
Anyway, I'm stoked. No, it's not a standard, but I'm digging it.
