The only guitar I have any desire to play anymore is my Gibson Explorer. I just developed this unquenchable thirst for baseball bat necks and TOMs and massive mahogany tone (even though this explorer has a maple neck/ebony FB and is quite bright, the body is still a huge chunk of mahogany).
And EMG 81s. I always leave, but I always come back. I'm pretty sure that is just the ultimate extreme metal pickup. You can make the debate for lead sounds (I don't like them for leads either), and older styles of metal, but it just slaughters everything when you switch between it and a passive guitar in terms of sheer attack.
Who cares if it's a phase, it's a worthy phase.
