I've been thinking about the whole Ibanez modding thing lately, since although it's a niche, it's pretty popular because a lot of people don't get quite what they want out of stock models. That's where replacement pickguards, funky coloured pickups, even replacement necks and bodies come in. From that demand, a few companies like Perle, ET Guitars and Area 51 have been selling the latter two, with some people building 'Ibanez' guitars from 0 Ibanez parts.
I reckon it could actually be a profitable thing to do for Ibanez if they sold 6 and 7 string RG necks and unfinished bodies with a few variations, such as body woods and pickup cavity configs.
What do you guys think?
Fender did it, and I dont think it was a hit... But then again, Fenders audience is at large sad old gits. But they have a fairly good amount of models and finish choices, unlike Ibanez... Black, and bare wood, is pretty much what you can choose from. They have LESS AND LESS MODELS EVERY YEAR!
Partsguitars ARE a limited market tho, not everyone is ready for it, therefor I dont think Ibanez will try it.
I would probably be super excited if you could choose body and neck finishes.
And stailess steel frets. Hahaha,
But yeah, if Perle and the others are good enough, then why not go that route? I've checked Perle bodies from time to time but I would like one finished, and then dont really offer that in their "online builder".
