Hey guys - moderately long post...
Well, I did the unthinkable; I did something I said I would never do... and I might as well admit it. I traded away my RGA121. I pause for a moment to don my asbestos undies.
I loved that guitar - but stopped playing it, entirely. For one reason or another, I seem to have settled into less djent-style, shitty-shred-attempt practicing and more melodic/bluesy/southern/hard rock experimentation. And I seem to be drawn back to the Strat... this is my 3rd shot at it.
I didn't do an NGD on the guitar I traded for, because I sometimes feel I do too many trades and NGDs.
But I need some advice. Here goes: What I picked up is a 2008 Fender American Select Stratocaster in HSS. It's like the Deluxe except for a few features.
It's mahogany body with a modern C maple neck and rosewood fretboard. American 2-point trem with stainless saddles and some odd stainless roller nut. It comes stock with a Diamondback humbucker and two custom-staggered Tex-Mex singles in the middle and neck. The volume is an S1 switch with does all kinds of neat shit I haven't figured out yet. It doesn't just split the humbucker.
What I'm considering... I like the pups in it for now, but I want something with lower output and more "vintage-sounding" if you'll excuse the lack of knowledge. The Diamondback and Tex-Mex combo is pretty hot. I want to be able to do bluesy stuff but still ramp it up for hard rock and southern metal. Tim at Bare Knuckles suggested a Crawler and two Mothers Milk singles, which sounds okay to me. Whatever I do, I'm going to do a loaded pickguard.
I'm torn between HSS or SSS. I'm sure you know the obvious tug between options and the various pros and cons of each. I like the level balance offered by the SSS but the versatility offered by HSS. On the other hand, I have two HH guitars in my Gibsons.
I may snag both eventually. I'm not tearing apart the stock stuff - I'll probably just put it on a shelf in case I want to swap out sometime. Like I said, it's not a bad tone at all, just not what I'm craving right now. HSS or SSS and do you have any brand/model suggestions? I'm going to do a lot of research on this - any help/experience would be appreciated.
Make the HSS humbucker connected to a split/series/parallell miniswitch.
That way you can get full on humbucker, singlecoil sound AND a lower output "humbucker" sound.
