I've owned three PRS guitars. A Mushok baritone SE, a CU24 SE and a CU22 SE.
The SE line are usually made in Korea, but are a good, solid workhorse. Some folks upgrade tuners, pickups, nut and call it good. I upgraded the pickups in my CU24 and never had a problem with either of the other two components. Truth be told, the pickups were probably okay, too. I just wanted something different.
I've looked at the S2 line, which is PRS' shot at bridging the sizable gap between the SE line and the core line. There are several fine guitars in the S2 line and they're all made in USA, but with lower end components and wood than the core line. Everyone I've talked to that's owned an S2 likes it and I've even drooled over a couple of S2 Singlecuts with satin finishes.
If you shop around, you can sometimes find a core PRS used for 1200 - 1700. The S2 used will pop in between 700 - 1000. A used SE will come in betwen 400 - 650 depending on model/components/features.
I'd seriously consider used unless you have to have new. Then you're in the ballpark of an SE or an S2 someone is clearing out.
