Since im still GASing for a new Guitar and I managed to not buy on Impulse (yet), I settled down and decided I wanted something I dont have like a more Traditional Strat like guitar (except my Gio SHITBanez that I modded and Hangs on the wall), so the Specs that I nailed down are:
- Maple Fretboard (mandatory have no guitar like this and really want one)
- 22 frets (21 maybe)
- HSS (can be SSS but I would prefer HSS, HH in last case scenario)
- Pickguard or not (Having a Pickguard gives me more choices later on if so desired)
- Floyd (most certain to be blocked but I like the tuning stability a Blocked Floating trem can bring)
- No Baseball bat Neck
Since Im traveling a bit and probably will move to another country in less that 6 months Its a Guitar that will travel with me, dont want a piece of shit (Bullets etc) but cant justify anything 600-700+ and even that is stretching by a good margin, 400-500 would be my mark for new.... less for used.
So the options I gathered so far are (cause I saw some for sale used):
- LTD ST 203
I like the Distressed look(theres a regular version too), even though I would prefer another color instead of Black... but im not found on Sunburst finishes...
- Jackson SDX
Havent played any of the above so I dont know how the necks are, right now I have with me a Schecter Omen 6 (old version without the biding) initially I didn't liked the Neck profile but now Im used to it.
Main differences apart from cosmetics between those is that the LTD is an Alder Body and the SDX is Basswood, never had an Alder body guitar so it kinda makes me curious... PUPS I dont care since they will be replaced down the road most certain to an Andy Timmons set
Not having a simple way to adjust the Truss Rod kinda pisses me off from the SDX (but those are details)
In case I cant get with a Floyd the LTD still has options like:
or the Classic Vibe 50:
But im not too inclined on these... Dont know why, maybe I need to do a more in depth test drive since they are very easy to find in almost any store.
Last resort the Yamaha Pacifica 112:
Didn't dislike them at the store, but didn't really catch me either.. so its like a last resort kinda thing.
Also took a peek and tried briefly a Wolfgang Standart:
Not HSS and the Neck shape is a bit thicker than Im used too but I kinda digged her... although Im looking for a more "versatile" kinda Guitar, not saying its not versatile... The Shape and Design of her really grown on me this last couple of months (my wife seems to love the Purple one).
Theres also the Charvels... need to be used of course but trying one without buying is almost impossible... and never found a HSS one or anything below 600-700 euros used.
If money was no issue and if it was 22 frets:
LTS ST 1000 FR
This one is lovely!!!!
So my main questions...
How does the LDT ST 203 compares vs the Adrian Smith? They must be pretty much the same Quality wise I presume, or not? One is a Signature series and its basically the same prices as the Non Sig so what gives? How are the necks thickness on these?
Will I noticed a very different tone in Alder vs Basswood? Will it make that make much of a difference to have a more "Straty" sound? Mainly with the Mid and Neck Pups?
From all im more inclined to the LTD ST203 FR, too bad shes Black but I dig the distressed look, If i get the SDX I need to mod her to have a Truss Tod adjustment at the bottom, but I'm pretty sure the price of it will be overkill for this guitar
Argh... fucking decisions... Im guessing they are all about the same and its simply a matter of what appeals to me more visually... but... if anyone likes to take a hint feel free to do so.
No experiences here with the ones you've listed, but if you ease up on the Floyd requirement I'd suggest a G&L Legacy... they can be found HSS, their trem is nice, and sometimes you can find a used US version in your price range.. but the tributes are really nice as well.
