Default Inserts For Humbuckers! \m/

Hello folks! Here's something I managed to finish up this early afternoon before the floods came. It's an insert for a humbucker in a 7 string body. It was originally routed out for Phase II Blackouts for a customer. Unfortunately I didn't catch a design change so we came up with an insert approach to fix the issue.

This insert comfortably fits inside the Phase II rout and nicely frames a regular 7 string humbucker. This insert is made of cocobolo. I put some bevels on it and I think it does the job quite nicely.

What are your thoughts?

Aside from the Wood-not-plastic thing, what exactly makes this different from a conversion ring?

I assume that it's held in place by pressure?

With that said, though, it looks great, though I think the applications are limited. I can't see them being used well on guitars that have solid finishes, for example. On a natural/oil finish, though? Hot. Call them pickup frames, though.

When nothing less than second-best will do.

It's a good way of avoiding having to scrap the body

Well, hold on to that thought. I won't show my hand just yet, but what I've got up my sleave might make you reconsider what you just said. What I've got in mind I think has some very good applications. It might a few weeks before I've got time to work on it because of other customer projects, but when I get it all ready I'll show it on this thread and you can give me your thoughts on it.

Doing them in plastic or metal would be awesome.

I think the only thing I don't really like about it is the squared off corners. IMO it'd look a lot better with rounded corners.

Flamed maple would also be pretty cool, as long as the flame is oriented parallel to the strings. Ebony wouldn't be too bad either, though maybe more prone to cracking.

I like them, but, I too think rounding the corners a bit would be nice.

Also, why not use them as pickup rings so one could more easily adjust the pickup height? Right now, they kind of look like pickup rings, without the functionality.
