I've got my eye on a guitar, though i've looked at MANY over the past weeks anticipating my tax return, I think this is going to be the one. I played one a few years back and the playability and tone blew my mind.
The only problem is, this guitar has been modded and refinished. It has 1 humbucker....which I would like to replace with a Dogear pickup. The problem, I know I can route the cavity to fit the big tabs...but aren't Dogears a bit skinnier than a humbucker? Is there anyway I could get away with doweling/filling it without having to refinish it? I don't want to go with a humbucker sized P90 mostly because of the look I want to achieve, I will go with that if I have to but would really like a Dogear. The one I played had a real dogear and I wanted to take it home so bad....so here's my chance, I just need to mod the guitar into what it should be first.
I'm going to leave the guitar in question a mystery until I purchase it because the finished guitar will be badass and i'm getting it for a pretty stupid good price as well.
*edit* It looks like it may work without any mods other than a little bit of dremeling!
I'm starting to think this image isn't correct though...I still think dogears are skinnier than humbuckers just like soapbars? I always thought they were basically soapbar pickups, but with top mounted tabs, or are they wider than soapbars?
If anyone's interested the diagram IS correct and actually if anything I may need to dremel the cavity a bit (width) to fit it. With the cover attached, the Dogear will be slightly wider than a humbucker.
