AFAIK, BKP was the first one to popularize the aesthetic of covers with double rows of allen bolts. I would definitely say this is indicative of certain companies having their ears to the ground, so to speak, and copying whats "hot" ad incorporating it into their lineup. I'm pretty sure this is a new thing for Dimarzio though, not just on the Breed though, I imagine its available on other models, the page for the FRED also shows it with this option.
Sure, some luthier in New York in the 1970s might have pioneered this design and then it was forgotten to history except for three people on internet guitar forums, but for all intents and purposes I think this is pretty clearly Dimarzio copping the BKP aesthetic. If you look through the rest of the lineup on their site they are also offering other "ritzier" cover options.
