I was NOT at NAMM, but I was intrigued enough by the look and description of these pickups that I blindly ordered a Hyper Vintage anyhow. (60-day no hassle return policy, so why not?) A friend of mine knew I was in the market for one and he also knew that I was looking for something "different" so he sent me the link to Railhammer.com and I liked what I saw. Even with the awesome return policy.... this one isn't going back. If anything, I'm going to order a Chisel model as well to try out in one of my other guitars!
Anyhow, I ordered the Hyper Vintage (Bridge), installed it last night, and I gotta say... I love it. It's actually one of the lower-output humbuckers that he offers, but it has plenty of output for me personally. It seems like it's going to be an extremely good "rock" pickup. Right now I just wired it into my Fender Strat with the standard 250K pots that came with it but I saw that J Naylor recommended 500K pots with a .022mfd tone cap so I have that all on order and I plan to install and see how the sound changes. Joe Naylor knows a hell of a lot more about guitars than I do, so I figured I should take his recommendation. haha
It's sometimes hard to really describe a sound... I'd say that the title "Hyper Vintage" is pretty accurate for this pickup though. It has that PAF sound, but seems a bit more modern. That was exactly what I was personally looking for. I play through a Mesa Triple Rec, Mesa Studio Pre, and some older MusicMan/Gibson tube amps so I was looking for some pickups that would sound awesome for the Mesa dirty sounds as well as the MusicMan/Gibson vintage tones. I think this one hits the mark.
I will say though, this is definitely a rock/metal humbucker. By that I mean, I wouldn't really say that the CLEAN tones are amazing. They are definitely decent though. I have my Hyper Vintage paired with a Lace Sensor Blue and a Fishman PowerBridge so I have clean tones covered anyhow.
I hope that helps... I know that there's almost NOTHING on the web right now about this Railhammers so I wanted to share my experience. It may or may not actually be helpful to you guys.
In summary... I haven't even had mine installed for a full 24 hours yet but I can honestly say that I recommend them wholeheartedly and will be buying more models to try in the future!
