I've been playing my EX a lot lately and I've come to the conclusion that I absolutely love the sound of it. It sounds better than my 7 string even if I tune it down to B standard. My 7 has a 707 at the bridge which I like but it just doesn't sound as good as the 81. Does the 81-7 get close or are there any other alternatives?
Yeah I would have thought the 81-7 was the obvious answer
I have to say though, the 81 in my PRS has slightly less output than the 81-7 in my LTD. Only very slightly. But that could be down to many factors - battery, wood/construction, string age, different electronics etc etc. They are voiced identically though, the only differences occurring are due to the different guitars they are in.
When I had my Hellraiser, the 81-7 made a huge improvement over the 707 it originally came with. I liked the 707 in the neck, but in the bridge, it was basically only good for playing old Fear Factory and SYL songs that need "that sound".
I'm a total noob when it comes to this kind of stuff and I'll probably ask a lot more that will make you guys scratch your head
Is the 81-7 a simple drop in or will I need to rewire/solder? The guitar has push/pull pots, "splitting" the p/u into single coil. I'm really at a loss here
Are you sure the push pull pots actually do anything with the 707?
In theory if your 707 is wired correctly it should have a slide on connecter on the bottom of the pickup which you can just slide off and reconnect the 81-7 in its place and you're done.
If you have 707TW's they'll split, and I think they're 5-pin quick-connects, but, IIRC, you can slide the 5-pin over the 3-pin and it should work. That, or you could get an 81-7TW.
They just claim to have made the 'X' series a little more 'organic' or 'dynamic' and more passive-like. I've not yet tried any so I can't comment but there are comparison clips out there I should imagine.
