Hey guys. I just picked up an epiphone G-400 in great condition that I'm going to be taking to college in lieu of my more expensive EC-1000 and SVK Les Paul Custom. It's a reliable guitar, but the pickups sounds real muddy through the amp I'm taking, a Marshall AVT. The amp really gets a lot of it's character from the pickups in the guitar because it's mostly solid state, so I wanted to ask for some advice. I'm planning on grabbing something off ebay, and the three pickups I was looking at were a Burstbucker pro, 498T, or 500T. I don't have the cash to buy a new pickup right now, and I don't mind used product, but I wanted to ask you guys you opinion on which sounds the tightest on the lows and has some decent crunchy highs. I have a 498T in my Custom and it's decent, but I've never gotten to play a 500 and its been ages since I've played through a burstbucker pro.
The sound I'm aiming for is more of an all-rounder, I want to be able to play hardcore punk and thrash with this thing, and I'm gona be stuck with whatver i put in it for a while. I'd also consider seymour duncan distortion and duncan custom for the bridge, but they're harder to get in decent condition used. My last resort will be to put D-activators in this thing, as the lows need to be tight and the highs crunchy, like JCM800 with the treble on 10 crunchy.
If you guys could help me out that would be great. Some refernce points for what I want to be able to do with this guitar are Kreator, Sodom, and Subhumans, nothing overly modern really.
I have some random cheap Gibson pickups for sale. Don't know what the fuck they are though. Either 496t or 500t or something.
Get the SD Distortion though. That's an awesome pickup, that IMO is better then any Gibson XXXts for the application you want to use it for.
