More Youtube spam - I dug the Custom 69 and Texas Special combo, but I really liked the Area 61 when I had that in the neck slot of my Strat so I grabbed an Area 67, as thatr combo was pretty comparable to the Fender pickups I had in currently.
First impressions - the Fenders have a bit more of an acoustic-like sheen and sort of almost scooped clarity on the clean tones, while the Areas are a bit fatter and ballsier, and seem to be a bit hotter, but lose a little bit of sparkle. I used the same settings on this video for both sets, but backing off the preamp gain on the clean channel definitely helped the Areas, IMO. With gain, it's a lot closer - this shouldn't be surprising since these are noiseless pickups and 60 cycle hum is rarely a problem for clean/low gain settings, but the Areas are definitely geared for more "modern"/high gain applications than the Fenders. Also, between the modern polepiece stagger and the lower magnetic pull, they stay happy much closer to the strings than the Fenders, so between their slightly hotter output and their greater range of adjustment, they have quite a bit more effective output.
I'm not sure yet what set I'll leave in - I really like both for different reasons.
