So most of my guitars are mahogany. I use a Duncan JB bridge and a DiMarzio Air Norton neck in pretty much all of my guitars and they sound amazing. The only basswood guitar I've ever owned for a long time before now was the 7620 I sold Drew that has the Evo 7 in the bridge. That pickup was good, but really hot and while it was perfect for lead guitar, it lacked some of the round bottom end I like from the JB.
So here's the dilemma, I love the JB7 in mahogany. My S7 with this combination will be my recording guitar for as long as I'm recording. But now with my new basswood RG7, I'm looking for some new pickups. The DiMarzio/IBZ stock pickups are good quality, but I'm honestly used to a little better quality and want to upgrade.
So, what's going to get me some of the bottom end of the JB but voiced appropriately for basswood? I had a JB in a basswood LTD guitar years ago, and it sucked horribly. It's the same JB7 that tears paint off walls and brings down thunder upon my enemies in my S7 So shoot me some ideas. I'm not a fan of Petrucci's new sounds, so I think the Crunchlab is out. I'm angling more toward Duncans, but I'm open to DiMarzios. I haven't tried BK's yet, but they're expensive as hell and all I seem to see playing them are Djent kids, and I'm much more metal and metalcore in what I play.
So I'm open to new ideas, but I'm kinda clueless as to new pickups out there in the last 4-5 years. What should I look into?
I have exactly the same taste as you from your description, and the only pup that's ever made me happy in my 7620 is the BKP Holy Diver that's in there right now. It's basically Bareknuckle's 80's-style JB. It freaking destroys, yet remains versatile because the top end is pretty smooth. The bass is deep yet somehow very fast, so it doesn't come off as boomy.
I also had a Crunch Lab 7 in the guitar immediately before the HD, and it was the best pup I had tried to date, but was way too soft and compressed for me. The HD brightened and tightened it up.
A Liquifire 7 neck would still be a great mate to the HD and give you a hotter Air Norton vibe.
I tried a Blaze, New7, BKP Cold Sweat, Duncan Distortion and DiMarzio Crunch Lab in the bridge before the HD.
Also, you should be able to snag a BKP from ss.org for ~$100, and if you don't like it, it's easy to sell for the same. I'd even buy it off you but both my guitars are happily loaded right now.
