Hey goiz. Halp. Also, you get to have fun and influence my decisions!
So I've gotten really tired of the EMGs in my EC-1000. They're scratchy and lack warmth and life (Now I sound like Im from a classic rock forum), and I really prefer the PAFy sounds I get out of my Gibson 498T in the 'Paul and the J50BC in my Jackson.
I've decided that come Christmastime, after I collect some money together, I'm going to make the switch to passive with it. I'm going to do a two-volume knob and a coil split for the neck pickup, to get cleaner cleans and versatility.
And her'es where you guys come in:
The guitar is all mahogany, with an Ebony fretboard.
I'm looking for a very(emphasis VERY) glassy neck position humbucker. I'd prefer it to be medium output, as it will mostly be used for rolled back clean tones, but I'd also like it to have enough articulation for high gain leads, of course. Some pickups I'd been thinking about here were the SD 59 or the Jazz model, but I'm open to dimarzios as well, I just have very little experience with them.
For the bridge position, I'm much more open to suggestions. I've been tossing between a JB, Duncan Custom, or a Duncan Distortion. I'm looking for something aggressive, with an ear towards thrash and black metal, but still with dynamics. Dimarzios welcome as well. My main points of reference for tone would have to be Kreator, Toxic Holocaust, and Warbinger, as far as my sound in my head. I'm also a massive Dark Tranquillity fan, and I know that both DT and Warbringer use mostly JBs on their albums. This pup will always be going full bore, so I really don't care if it has good roll off, that's what necks are for, but I've realized I like a good organic sound with strong mids and agressive, yet rounded treble, if I was to describe it.
I guess I'm asking for your opinions. I'll head off all the suggestions to go BKP beforehand though, I unfortunately won't have 300 to drop on a set. Anything else is open game really, and I'd love to hear what you guys think I should go with.
Neck: Duncan Jazz or Dimarzio Humbucker from Hell. Both very glassy and clear. The HFH is like a high-powered single-coil that is very dynamic.
Bridge: Suhr Aldrich. A "better", less wooly, more dynamic JB.
