I had Jon Moore over at J S Moore Custom Guitar Pickups - Home wind me up a set of tele pickups; texas special in the bridge and a "vintage style" neck, wired to a 4-way switch. Unfortunately my tech had a hell of a time trying to install them, and was unsuccessful. I ended up driving to Hamilton Sunday afternoon to finally meet Jon and have the pickups installed. It turns out a small wire was cut on the baseplate of the bridge, so it was never going to work.
These pickups are in my USA deluxe, and sound killer! I didn't mind the stock pickups, but I wanted something more traditional in tone with some good bite in the bridge. After trying Eleven59's tele I knew the texas special would be a pretty good idea.
I first heard the amp through the clean side of a Bogner Alchemist 20W (I think it was 20W) into a 212 openback with a silver bell and something else. The spank! The sparkle! It sounded how a tele should, and the 4-way was cool in that the 4th position (closest to the neck) is series(?) and the 2nd position is traditional tele.
I fired it up through the FSM, and it sounds great . I don't have too much high end and all the notes come through. What I really enjoy is that since it's a single coil guitar, I can clean up much easier as opposed to my singlecut. I get nice quack in 2nd and 4th position, and the neck just oozes silky tones. Overall I'm quite pleased with my decision!
It was also great to finally meet Jon in person. His shop is just a room in the top level of his house. We had to rewind the bridge pickup, and he didn't charge me for it - greatly appreciated, and great customer service. We talked about his guitars ('83 LP studio - alder body, maple neck, ebony board... gotta get me one of them!) and about pickups and possible experiments. I told him that I'm after something with P90's, and also asked him about mini humbuckers.
If you guys want, I'll make a quick vid with my bandmates' tweaker 15 and PRS 212 soon. No date chosen yet for the "Rig rundown" with the FSM as yet.
If you want a passive pickup, I highly recommend emailing Jon and seeing what he can make for you.
Nice, a video would be awesome I love Texas Specials, I just can't stand the hum of singles.
