I know this is not a new opinion, and I've played 85s in bridges before, but never on one of my main guitars, setup in drop A# (what I normally play in).
The high end tails off at just the right frequency compared to the 81 to take the razorblade cut out of it (which most of the time I want, sometimes I dont), its just a little cooler so its not as utterly brootal, its mids are more low-mid focused to the 81s high mid focus and theres a bit more in the lows going on that gives it more weight, but dialed in the same it doesnt become overbearing or bloaty, nor is it at all un-tight.
I've been after this compliment to my main guitar for some time. It has an 81 in it. First world problem: its too fucking good and everything else I put an 81 just sounds like The Legra Aurora Light. Its also been slaughtering guitars with BKs and entwistle HDNs in (though the HDNs faired better). This is similar enough that it hangs with it on the same amp settings, different in ways that sit well with it.
I'm dead chuffed. Should have done it much sooner, just had to get over the NO! 81 GO IN BRIDGE! 85 GO IN NECK! Habit.
Now....how does the HDN do in my main jackson...*plugs in soldering iron again*
Nice! I still need to put in this HDN I picked up from Tony...
