FedEx guy dropped off the box about an hour ago, figured I'd do a quick switcheroo before I jumped in the shower and started my weekend.
Short version: The Custom sounds awesome, Schallers were a direct swap, but the 68 does NOT fit with these. Fortunately, since I am Lord Of The Strings, I had a whole bunch of oddball D'Addario XLs kicking around. I ended up getting a 62 in there, but the next string change will probably be a 60. :\
The upside is that at 27.7", it's not at all floppy in Bb standard. The 68 was a hell of a lot better for drop A and lower, but I can live with it considering how much I'll actually play this guitar.
Some random pics.. Tunes for the swap on a nice Saturday morning:
Existing wiring, nice and clean. Toshiro would be proud:
Existing pickup. It's by "G&B Pickup Company", who I've never heard of. I (obviously) don't like it, but it might be a little better in a normal tuning. It kind of sounds like a JB, but muddier.
Let's get the Custom in there:
Somewhat cleaned back up, with a comically long lead wire. If anyone needs it, to swap a PRS SE stock pickup with a Duncan, just swap:
White lead from PRS: Black from Duncan
Black lead from PRS: Ground
Green / Bare from Duncan: Ground
Red / White from Duncan: Solder together and shield.
String it back up... Like I said the 68 doesn't fit, which sucks, but I ended up with 14 - 18 - 26 - 44 - 56 - 62 which is still pretty tight and more than good enough for me. If this were an everyday player, I'd recommend going with Sperzels, or anything else that will fit the 68 because it really is a lot nicer in lower/dropped tunings. (Flub is bad, mmmkay?)
Such a good album, I think I once made the questionable statement that Rage for Order sucks. But then again I've made a lot of questionable statements ("I'm putting EMGs in all my guitars.") that I've since reneged on. Awesome album.
Thread was a disappointment overall though. Came in expecting shiny new Schaller OFR installation in your Dinky.
