Some of you may have read one of my first posts about the all original Signature Peavey Vandenberg I picked up.
Well, I just plugged it in to play a little while ago and I could hear all kinds of crap coming through the pickup, and it's mixing into everything I play.
There's popping, crackling, and then some weird thumping sound that comes and goes. I made a short clip with the volume up and strings muted. At 15 seconds, the thumping sound comes in.
On top of that, notes on the lower strings have become bassier and muffled sounding. Almost like, if you back your pickup far away from the strings, further into the cavity.
I looked over the wiring, but I can't see anything at fault.
(And yes, I've tried the same setup and 1/4" guitar cable with different guitars and had no problems)
I'm thinking the pickup is on it's last leg...considering that it's over 20 years old and the noise goes away when I switch to the single-coil in the neck position.
Anyway, I wanted to ask if potting the pickup would solve this, or maybe something else, as opposed to just buying a new pickup and replacing it?
I really liked how the original pickup sounded until this crap started happening, so replacing the pickup is going to be a final resort.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Is your cable sloppy in the guitar jack?
