A while ago I put the set of Al DiMeola PUPs in my Charvel 750XL. I love the neck pickup and also love the bridge but in the bridge I am finding I need more output and less mids. The lead sound of that pickup is very good but just not enough guts in it to be what I need for tracking heavy riffs. I would like to stay with DiMarzio so I was hoping for some suggestions for a heavy Les Paul type guitar that would have a pretty flat EQ response and higher output? Im looking at the D-Sonic, Illuminator and Distortion currently.
Any advice mucho appreciated.
FYI- I am leaning toward D-Sonic
D-Sonic isn't 100% hum-cancelling, as I understads. If you're looking for a dry, crisp, Petrucci sort of tone, though, that's probably a step in the right direction. The Illuminator is likely very similar, whereas the Super Distortion is Dimarzio's original foray into high output pickups, and probably isn't all that hot by modern standards. Actyually, that's a lie, I just looked it up and it is.
A Steve's Special or Evolution would probably work well in mahogany, for different reasons - Steve's Special being a bit scooped and complimentary to the midrange ofd the mahogany, while the Evolution being focused a bit more in the upper mids, vs the lower mid focus of mahogany.
EDIT - and I have played an Evo7 in mahogany - fucking killer lead tone.
