I've just got me 470 back from the local tech who's done a great job cleaning it up and attending to the frets (I may get him to raise the action a little bit, as it's waaay too shreddy at the moment). Unfortunately, he's cleaned up all the electrics and it is now apparent that the awful screeching noises are coming from the pickups and not the electrics (by this I mean the v8 is rather screechy).
I thought I'd ask people for opinions on what works in a basswood RG? I'm into doom and NWOBHM mostly. The guitar is an early Japanese 470, so whatever works in a 570 should be great in there.
EDIT: I may well only replace the bridge, so recommendations for that would be brill.
Well, the screeching from the pickups (if you like the sound of them) can be fixed by wax potting them. Not hard to do, you need the right ratio of paraphin and beeswax (i believe, last time i did this was to fix the pups on my uv7pwh, and that as 5-6 years ago). Melt the wax in a tin can on a stove (any old tim can like a heinz beans will work, as long as the pickup can fit in it. Hold pickup by the lead, make sure wax is melted bu not too hot, submerge pickup untill all the air bubble come out, remove pickup, place on a towel to cool, remove excess wax from top, put back in guitar, job done!
Otherwise, in terms of pickup, are you looking for high gain? medium gain? tight? a description will help everynoe figure out where to look and what to look at
