Or whatever you want to call them
I'm bored to death of EMGs which I couldn't be bothered to change because of the size. Now that "soapbar" 7-string pickups are widely available I want to go the most opposite to the EMG sound I possibly can (while still being able to play metal).
I love my SD JB/Jazz as to me they sound "alive", if that means something. The cleans are beautiful like a piano and they translate every nuance of my playing. Shame the JB-7 sounds tubby on the low B
I know that the JBs get much hate, but I'm looking for something that gives me that "alive" feeling while also giving me a decent metal tone. I am seriously lost with so many options these days.
The guitars they will go in are a Schecter Loomis FR (ash/maple/maple) and a Jackson SLAT3-7 (maple/alder/rosewood). These seem to be on the ballpark but I have zero experience with them:
- SD Pegasus/Sentient <- These just sound fantastic in every clip I've heard
- BKP Juggernauts or Blackhawks (alnico) <- Atypical pickup designs. They peak my curiosity although they get mixed reviews.
- EMG 57/66 <- They seem to have a "best of both worlds" sound. Also, I wouldn't need to change the electronics which is a plus.
So what would you recommend? Any input is welcome. Feel free to recommend others if you will!
The 57/66 seem to get a lot of love from the non-EMG fans.
