yo MGer's, I have a slight conundrum. I have a 6 string that I built a few years back with my dad, and the pickup is a middle position single coil. Now, it sounds phenomenal and surprisingly massive just by itself, but I really want to switch it to a humbucker, just for fat sludge riffs, but the only one I have lying around (and I have a pretty lame job so saving isnt really an option) is an old Duncan Designed 7 string pickup.
Would it be a bad idea to change it to the DD pup, leaving the highest pole pieces outside of the strings? Does this create unnecessary noise or interference? and also would this give me meaty tones? Thats kind of what Im going for here.
Shouldn't be an issue. But, it will look odd essentially routing a 6 string to fit a 7 pickup. Probably easiest to sell the 7 pickup and get a new 6 string one which will fit better.
