I grabbed a fantastic Musicman Silhouette Special this week in one of the PDN colours, Emerald Green Sparkle. The thing looks amazing and plays great too. Very similar to my James Tyler that I've barely put down in the last 6 months. I only have one problem with it though...the stock DiMarzio Virtual PAF in the bridge. Coupled with the alder body, maple neck and fretboard the thing is way too bright! It's very thin and brittle, almost single coil-esque. Very little bottom end at all. It would be great if I was going for that single coil sound...but I'm not.
I want something at least medium output with way more meat to it. More bottom end and something that sounds good once you start laying on some gain.
I've read a few threads around the world wide web that suggest a DiMarzio Norton or Fred. I was thinking maybe even an AT-1 or Transition? I would have liked a Tone Zone but apparently it smothers 250k pots. I don't mind switching out to 500k pots if I absolutely have to but I rather love the single coils in this guitar and I wouldn't want to change them by moving over to 500k pots.
Any suggestions? I'd prefer to stay DiMarzio but I'm open to other suggestions.
The JB was intended to be used with 250k pots. I've read both the Norton (not the Air variety) and the AT-1 are close to the JB in sound.
