And they were under my nose all along, thanks to the beratings of MDV and Toe-Knee. Both of whom have been howling at me to try these things for no less than about 2 years.
Entwistle HDN's (high definition Neodymium)
They are, quite honestly, fucking ridiculous.
The neodymium magnet is so strong. When I unboxed them and placed them on my desk, a few of my tools started to creep towards them like a scene from a Spielberg sci-fi.
They're hot, but not stupid hot. They're not X2N territory, but they're EMG/TB-6 territory. Or at least they have that feel and fluidity, anyway. But they're clear. Clear as a bell, and as tight as you like. If you saw my other thread you'd know I've been moaning that this guitar makes pickups sound a bit neutered, and couldn't really get the fluidity I like out of it, and harmonics were difficult. Well these remedied that in a heartbeat. They squeal like pigs, but are SUPER quiet.
You can really dig in for the chugs and there's not an ounce of flub or anything, they stay really tight. I've got this guitar down in drop C# and it's got a glorious growl to it. They also cut through really nicely and are really articulate and defined. But they somehow don't sound thin either, unlike an EMG.
The best (or worst, haven't figured it out yet) part is... They were £19 each, to my door.
I say worst because if I'm brutally honest, that's what kept me from buying them in the first place, despite everybody's recommendations. There's something to be said for getting the right price point, and you can price yourself right out of the market. Usually people try to stay competitive by not going too high, but you can do yourself a huge deal more damage by pricing yourself too low.
I don't really care how or why they're so cheap, I just know that they shouldn't be. They hold their own right up there with any Seymour Duncan or Dimarzio I've ever played. Their distribution and dealership relations is also shit, as one of the only places I seem to be able to find them for sale is eBay (an even bigger culprit for making yourself look like a two-bit cowboy budget-brand)
All in all, they're a fucking fantastic pickup for any style. Clear, crisp distortion that is cutting but not harsh in the least. Bell-like cleans, especially when split.
Clips/video coming soon!
I'm honestly real keen to hear some clips because the price point looks ducking brilliant, even here. I have a pair of guitars that need some new pickups so I may check out the range again.
