Its time to replace the neck pickup in my old Carvin. When I bought it the guy said its Koa, I think the neck MIGHT be mahogany...the color is slightly different but I'm not really certain. Ebony board.
I've always had an X2N with a PAF Pro. I'm not terribly unhappy with the tone, I like how clear the clean tones are. I like that there's a great amount of low end in it, its clear and I dig the overall character of it. I do wish that it were a little 'thicker' though, especially for lead tones.
The pickup does need to be replaced because I've pretty much run out of lead on it and one of the wires broke last night while I was working on it...rather than trying to splice it together again, I just want to go ahead and replace it since I've been considering it anyways.
I've considered the Super 2, D-Activator X, Evolution & Air Norton after a lot of googling looking for other threads like these.
I want the D-ActivatorX to work just because it matches the X2N with the rails...but thats petty and low on the list of reasons to buy one.
Disclaimer: In googling, I found a ton of responses of people hating the X2N for various reasons...too high output, harsh highs, not musical, etc etc. I don't find any of it to be true, or I've just gotten so accustomed to it having used it exclusively for the past 8 years or so that I don't care any more. I don't really intend to change it.
