    The idea was to make something I could use to give a guitar a killswitch temporarily without modding it in any way. If you're going to drill into the guitar for it, you may as well just properly install one.

    That's not how they're typically wired up. You're thinking of the killswitch being placed in the audio circuit before the jack. Check the diagram. The switch connects the hot wire to the ground, so when the switch is open, it has no effect on the circuit, and when it's closed, the signal is redirected to the ground.
