What is the best bang for your buck? Ive done fine with just a set of needle files for bass, but theyre not fine enough for guitar.
Stewmac has a set here
STEWMAC.COM : Double-edge Nut Files
Which if you figure the first 4 is .012-.060, works out to ~$100 (not counting the probably $72 shipping or so knowing stew mac).
They also have a set of rough cut saws
STEWMAC.COM : Gauged Saws
Which goes down to a .010, but i dont imagine making a smooth enough slot.
Allparts has a set here
Nut File Set | Allparts.com
with a few other sizes available for $25 or so a piece if i should need them. Theyre more expensive than the stewmacs, even if you get a deal (since stewmac pricing with the double files makes for about the same as the dealer cost buying from allparts), but i dont know how the quality compares.
I also see this set at allparts
Nut Slotting File Set | Allparts.com
and available here
Guitar Nut File Set, 3 double sided, includes carrying | eBay
Ive heard good things about this style (the old ibanez style i guess?) from lots of people. But, they only go down to a .016. And what if i decide to keep using my 10-52s, or god forbid, i get even drunker than that one time i drunk dialed drew and chris, and decide to use 9s ()? Do i need a set like this and a smaller file to get down to a 9/10/other sizes between 10 and 16?
The set i used to use at work was a complete set with every gauge from a .008 to a .080, so I just used the appropriate size and went to town. Id like to avoid spending $90793458490328423 on my own set though, so I'm asking you experienced types, whats the best bang for my buck?
