My pending Vik will have Gotoh SG301 tuners installed. I didn't noticed this detail until recently, and since last I heard they're nearly complete - it's a bit late to do anything about it.
These tuning machine might be good enough, but if not - does anyone know if there is a drop in 510 level replacement?
It looks like the SGV510 might work -
301 dimension -
SGV501 dimensions -
I imagine the most important dimension are the distance between the post centerline and the set screw and the diameter of in-headstock hole (whatever that's called).
Is my reasoning sound?
If so, where the hell can I buy 7 of the SGV510Z? None of the normal parts sites I know of seem to be aware of them.
The 510 will fit right on, but honestly, there's a whole lot of fuck all difference in quality. The SG301 is extremely accurate, and superior to other brands, zero slack in the gearing etc. I see no advantage to the 510 except for cork sniffer value. The gear ratio is a little finer, especially the 21:1 version, but that's not necessarily a good thing as it just means you have to turn the button a few more times to get where you need to be.
That said, I'm ordering Gotoh stuff right now and have to get a bunch of 510 series as that's what I've got specified for a bunch of guitars. My common sense is asking why I'm spending 3 times as much for them over the 3 series
