I'm going use this thread to document building a guitar that I've been wanting. :yesway:
Was looking at just buying a guitar but I have spare time and I figured I would just build one. To start though, I'm not gonna build the entire thing. It's either going to be a 7 or 8 string based off one of these... the Carvin pre-made 7 or 8 string neck:
Not going to have the tooling for fret work or the patience anytime soon. Maybe later, though.
Right now, other than a 7 or 8 string, I am also debating on what fretboard wood to go with. Trying to decide between ebony or birdseye maple. I'm leaning towards ebony(my personal fav).
Either way, it's going to have alder body wings and the body style is going to be the Carvin V220. :metal:
I also went tool shopping today. I've got sanders, a plunge router and other hand tools but I was looking for things like band saws, drill presses, etc. Ended up not buying anything yet but I did find some things and made a "list". Probably start buying and ordering things sometime next week. And I'm sure I'll post that stuff up in here too.
And last but not least... I've ALWAYS wanted to have a dedicated shop for doing projects like this in. In my backyard I have a little 8'x8' shed. It's your typical yard equipment, little barn shaped shed. It's falling apart and all we really have in it is a bunch of crap that we haven't touched in nearly 5 years other than our lawn mower and weed eater. The best part about it is that it already has power run to it! :yesway:
My plan is to build a little yard tool shed and tear our existing shed down to the floor and re-build it into a little shop for me. I will probably do this later in the spring. Maybe late April/early May. Gonna hire Shannon(and pay him in cheap beer) to come down and help me with that project! :agreed: This part will most likely be a piece by piece project that gets done a little at a time. I will basically make the "shell" first and then finish the inside as money permits with the hope of having it totally complete by the end of summer.
Super excited about both of these projects! Going to take a while but I'll update as things progress. :yesway:
