    Fresh Strings With Kink?

I'm just wondering if you guys ever get these and if it means anything to you. This string was kinked as shown right out of the package.

It hasn't seemed to make a difference, but it gets me wondering about the origin of the defect (coiling/packaging process? looks like it was bent around a wheel or something) and if it has an impact on string life/intonation characteristics (e.g. if there's residual stress at the point of the bend).

I don't think I ever got one from D'Addario, but I've received a few from Dunlop (along with an extra 28, and no 17, in a Heavy7 set ).

Just an observation from a quality control engineer.

I got a set of Markleys that had a kink like that in the unwound G string. I tried to straighten it the best I could, but the king landed right about the 15th fret or so when I strung the guitar, so it would buzz like crazy whenever I played up there.

Yeah this was a plain 17, and I think the kink ended up somewhere around fret 24 or the neck bucker.

Looks like there's some kink going on in the background of your picture, sir.

I was watching Troy while setting up my 570.

I got a string with a mild kink in it years ago that was part way up the neck, the position didn't really matter since I was so bad at the time .

I'm surprised that made it through quality control seeing as how D'Addario hand package their strings. After watching the "How it's Made" episode I'm still not seeing it.

I've had this multiple times with Markleys and EBs, and once with Dimarzios. If it is at the fretboard, yes it sucks as you will get some additional buzz. If not, I don't think it is as big of a deal.
