Volume pot seized up and died

Something weird happened this evening. I put the guitar down for a brief while, picked it up again, and the volume knob was really tight to turn. It felt like it was about to start grinding against the finis, so I loosened it and took it off.

The pot was very difficult to turn, so I used a screwdriver on it. I turned it all the way up but the output from the pickup was tiny. Then it went silent and was impossible to move without feeling like it'll break.

I'll just replace it, but it's a strange problem I've not encountered before. Is this relatively common?

Just rip it out, and wire that shit right to the output

I struggle with which way round a battery goes. I wouldn't know how to do that.

The wire that goes to the solder lug on the volume pot would go to the solder lug on the output jack that connects to the tip.

The wire that goes to the ground (or maybe soldered to the enclosure) would go to the sleeve

Stick an ON/OFF switch on that, and you're half-way to what I've been doing to all my guitars lately
