Ok, so after James kindly donated some old E34Ls i've retubed my old fallen angel combo, i've paired it with my POD HD, and just using a few untweaked old patches the thing sounds monstrous.
ive decided rather than go down the simple route of pairing the HD500 with a rackmount power amp, i'm going to convert the combo to a head and pair it with a nice 2x12.
head shell is coming along nicely which you'll be able to see that when I do a build thread when its complete., but I've noticed the amp chassis has a lot of surface rust which i would like to clean up, as I'm planning on having a grill on the front and the chassis will be visible.
I thought about cleaning up the rust and repainting, but i don't like the idea of doing this with all the dust that will be sanded off potentially getting in and causing a huge mess. I've also toyed with the idea of removing the components and getting a a nice new shiny chassis to put everything in. The websites I've seen don't seem to stock one in the size i need (25.5 inches).
does anyone have any experience in this area and would have any recommendations? i want to keep costs relatively low, so sanding down the rust would make sense but how easy is this to do considering the close proximity of the amps internals (transformers and tube sockets)
i've attached some pics in case it helps.
THat isnt too bad. If you get some Brasso on it it should come right off.
If you still want to go the route of sanding just tape up all the holes and be very careful about it.
I recently pulled the head version of one of these apart and it was a bit of a bugger reassembling it as the pcb was very flimsy and the mounts for it were plastic and broke quite easily.
If you are going to paint it however you will want to strip it all down.
I'd attempt the brasso route first.
