Hey guys first post..
I've been lurking for a while but decided it was time to join as I have a question.
I have been playing guitar for about 6 years or so and learned on old blues and classic rock such as Zeppelin and Hendrix.
I recently formed a band to play 90s grunge such as stone temple pilots pearl jam and the like but it seems that the band is moving in a different sort of direction- that is towards more of a modern metal sound.
My problem is that I'm used to plugging straight into the amp- no pedals or maybe just one pedal for a little extra gain on leads. I need a recommendation for a pedal that will give me that modern metal sound without having to re do the eq on the amp. We're going to mix the harder grunge stuff with original metal so I basically want to set up the amps drive channel for grunge then tap the pedal and have the heavier metal sound.
My rig consists of
Epiphone goth explorer with dimarzio x pickups
Epi sg goth with meg 8185s( dropped to c, main metal guitar
Epi sg 400
Strat for cleans
Sorry for the novel
Thanks for any advice
If you want a pedal that takes your amp's drive channel's grunge tone and makes it more metal sounding, you might start by trying a tubescreamer-style boost pedal. There are tons of versions from just about every pedal brand and they're pretty cheap to get into (I have a Digitech Bad Monkey that is like $50 new and $30 used that is great). Just keep the pedal's gain low and the pedal level high, and it should "boost" your drive tone into a more saturated and tighter metal tone. What kind of amp are you playing now? The boosting strategy usually works best on tube amps, though it's not bad on solid state either.
