I'm sorry Charlie, it had to be done...

For anybody who doesn't know, this is Charlie, my fondest (even if not the best-performing) guitar of my stable, and thus far the one that's been with me the longest.

Anyway, after swapping pickups out a lot over the last year or so, it's been a pain in the ass having to route the shallow pickup cavities (routed for JB/59, both short alnico pickups) to take taller ceramics and what not.

Not to mention the constant fucking up of tab threads from the direct-mount screws. Adjusting height has also been an issue, especially since I've routed where the tabs go to take taller pickups, so when reverting back to something shorter it's been a real fight.

So today I installed pickup rings

A little sacrifice in aesthetics in favour of functionality, but at least I can adjust and swap stuff out as I see fit.

Though funnily enough at the moment it's pretty much got the stock pickups in it (JB/Jazz though, as opposed to JB/59)

The pickup rings look cooler anyway. Hated how these look with direct mount.

    looks better IMHO.
